FarmGal’s 3rd post and Permy Links

Howdy, I am reposting/repressing/reblogging (not sure of all the differences here!)

FarmGal’s 3rd permy info session is here, http://livingmydreamlifeonthefarm.wordpress.com/2012/04/24/hugelculture-making-hill-beds-for-garden-use/ Search through her site and find some interesting Recipes, do this after lunch and not before! Also look for Oxen/Ox training of Girl, the name of her Female cow who is being trained as an Ox. Very cool indeed

Why do this;

  • ok, I am lazy?
  • She has great info, Farmgal has so lets get you the info from the person who actually went to the lecture, who has some great hands on experiences. So in essence from the Oxen’s mouth, cause she does not have a horse, but is training to Cows to be Oxen, explanation is cheesy right?
  • As part of my journey and for my own memory reasons, I document some information and share it with whomever feels like reading this.
  • Aquaponics Family is another example, I am totally impressed with them, totally EH! (he he, now look at the sentence and say it like a valley girl, with the Eh like one of the hossers)(hhmmm too much caffeine for me, but it is fun and I like to write like I talk, the world is too serious already)

Next you will find a link to a post that was done a while back by myself with links to the leaders in the Permaculture Fields. I will probably be editing the links soon to include the Aquaponics Family and a few other sources for Aquaponics information. Another great innovation that can be done in your basement, you garage or backyard.
Here is the link to their site and to their profile

Now I am think that if you take some lessons from the lecture series from Prof Will Hooker Prof. NCS in the USA – follow through to a great and interesting presentation and video series on Permaculture pay attention to his house visit lecture #5 or 6 where he talks about his small Frog Pond and fist ponds and the effects on the surrounding nature

add in the ideas from Geoff Lawton and Here is the link to the Permaculture Australia site and AgroForestry and Food Forests.

Read up and watch info on Bill Mollinson Here is a link to a Wiki article on him and Sepp HolzerHere is a link to his Farm and info Website

All of the sources above have video links to those who are too tired to read, so Google and YouTube the names and come up with some Videos to watch, get the family interested.

A Farm For the Future – very well presented and easy to watch a great intro video for you, your family and others around you. (British)
How Cuba Survived Peak Oil, this was surprising, so all encompasing and teaches us all that you can do it on a Nation Wide Basis!
Cuba Power of Community  How Cuba survived Peak Oil Crisis (slovenski podnapisi) full name to search for
Next search for Videos and PDF’s, books by Jean Pain on Jean Pains methods of Bio Heating and Bio Fuel (that is a real I opener, so easy to at least cut the costs of heating houses, barns and the like and all the info is from the 80’s and proven time and again)

Bill Mollinson – Global Gardener Series
Geoff Lawton and Here is the link to the Permaculture Australia site his speciality is Food Forests so search for that and his name

Of course my personally Fav of all time, Sepp Holzer and his books, video series and short YouTubes made by other people who visited him!

* Now you can start by planting some 3 Sisters Gardens, smaller and uncomplicated, eventually grow into the Full Blown Permaculture and Aquaponics Routes, this is a natural progression. You can start all of this in your backyard or basement, in your new or existing Homestead, on your wild and natural acreage or in your tree lot or hunting camp. Want to help keep the animals out, Sepp Holzer suggests that you plant food for them in lots of areas in your property. Plant lots of Lettuce, they all love lettuce. I would do a 3 sisters garden technique for them and you then, seed lots of areas in your property and in the ajacent property. Just dig a little bit, cover with some soil and walk away! Repeat, Repeat, Repeat. The only cost is some seeds.

Why do this, plant for the animals, my answer is WHY NOT!  We as Humans are greedy, we take over all the land that we see saying it is ours, the animals have been here for 50,000 yrs or more, and that is just for the modern version of the bears! Give some thought and think on it, ok. We take over everything, kill off the forests, the fields and swamps, where to they live, where to they get food. Well if I was a hungry animal in the wild, I would learn quickly to look for humans, since they are everywhere! Ok, let them look, now plant stuff in their path, find game trails, out of the way areas of your paddocks, fields, swamp or wetlands, plant food there for them. Propagate some the natural foods as well, such as Jerusalem Artichokes, Aramath, Nettles and the list goes on and on. Remember, you can forage in these areas as well, take some of the natural foods, enjoy them, take some others and replant them for others.

Remember become Land Stewards and not just occupiers, work with Nature and Nature will work with you. God loves those that help themselves. Maybe if he sees you helping the animals with food, he will send some helpers to direct the animals to the safer wild areas and away from your Gardens! Just a thought, just a thought.

Now any comments or links to Aquaponics, Permaculture, Hugelculture, AgroForestry and FoodForests not covered are welcome to be put as comments at the end of the blog, so please share with others. The Government will never really help us, so lets help ourselves.
p.s. spam will be deleted as a matter of course!

cheers and looking forward to your comments and links ~WildE

How we plan to make the permy garden soon

Hi there,
We plan on creating our forest garden in the following ways;

Look up Permaculture as stated, then start planting some 3 Sisters Garden, the following link is the Google info page on it in raised garden beds. Look to info from
Sepp Holzer, Here is a link to his Farm and info Website
Sepp Holzer, Here is a link to his Farm and info Website
(awwwww well since it took me so long to make the links work, I will keep the double links to Sepp Holzer, he deserves it!)
Geoff Lawton and Here is the link to the Permaculture Australia site

Bill Mollinson Here is a link to a Wiki article on him

They all suggest multiple raised beds, which are really easy to make their way like little long rows of TeePees with some Fruit and nut trees in the middle of the rows. They all put in over 20 variety’s of plants, Sepp Holzer uses his own special blend of seeds which contain over 40+ varieties of seeds. They just scatter the seeds in randomly or plant some in a loose pattern and cover with a thin layer of topsoil. So it becomes a Bordello instead of just the 3 sisters, the more the merrier.

You do need to follow a few simple permaculture rules;
water is needed in the swails to help sustain the raised beds
you need plants of varying rood depth and varying heights mixed all together
some deep rooting fruit and nut trees in the middle of the swails will help with pulling up deep moisture, creating shade and lead to long term food production.
create some self sustaining Frog ponds at first
longer term you want some self sustaining frog and fish ponds
rocks are your friends, they help bring and keep the heat, provide moisture underneath and a hiding area for beneficial insects and reptiles
worms are your friends, lots and lots and lots of worms.

Put in a wee frog pond, with some water plants in the middle of it all, put rocks and some stumps in the water, add Frogs and watch what happens, quite interesting.
For some info on the Frog pond watch the Lecture Series #5 by Will Hooker Prof. NCS in the USA – follow through to a great and interesting presentation and video series on Permaculture

Edited 5 times to make the links work, I am not sure why WordPress Hickoped like that, so I did the link manually, and now they work.
cheers WildE

What I did for Prepping this week 6th March 2011

On another blog someone posted that with the price of gas going higher they bought Locking Gas Caps Well here in Ontario Canada where the price of gas is an all time high of $1.27 per Ltr (aprox $5.08 Gal US) that was one of the things I forgot to buy today thanks for the reminder. That is on my list for Monday now!

Found more info on a previous topic on how to eat your survival food. Now I know a lot more about sprouts and seeds and beans, so I will be buying a hand operated WheatGrass press it is only $54 Cdn and will make the shouts edible with lots or goodness in them.
· Then to order or make some trays for them to sprout in.
* Bought another small Blue Barrel for water tight storage, might leave it in the vehicle with all my BOB stuff in there not sure, I will be buying 1 every 2 weeks for the next 2 months.
* Playing with Fire is fun, now.. I am making expedient lamps and learning about wicks, I now have a few different ways to make the lamps some more elaborate than others as some are down right simple.
* Looking for parts for a portable Rocket Stove, for heating and making a smaller Cooking Rocket Stove as well. The Portable Rocket Stove that I am designing, am now looking for parts, now to make this as it is hard enough to get the parts, image after WTSHTF ?
* Will be making a permanent Rocket Mass stove, in the spring so found some great examples to make it work for me.
* Was looking at the pricing for some Canvass for my Yurt I will be making soon, so that when I need to move out of here in the next couple of months I do not have to be in my little camping tent.
· Found some local businesses that sell Anti-Biotic and Hormone free Beef and Chicken, bought some this week, it tasted yummy and less stress on my mind about the additives.
· Found info on Three Sister Gardens, very cool ideas for the interaction and symbiotic relationship planting of gardens. The Three Sister Method involves Corn, Squash and a climbing Bean variety.

On the Permaculture forum, they were talking about making portable rocket stoves, though the design was more semi permanent, I actually thought about it, and have come up with a great real portable design. Though finding the items here is difficult, no wood stove items in sight around here any-more, only gas.

My work is starting to get busy again, thank the Gods for miracles. This coming Sat there is a meeting for writers that I have missed the last 3 months so I will make sure I get there this weekend. Perhaps, I can make time to come up to the property before or on following Mon & Tues. I would love to stay at the property, but thoughts of freezing in the rain right now.. just not my thing any-more.. LOL wimp.. As it will cost me about $45 for the gas alone, I want to maximize the visit.

While up there, we will look for more cougar tracks! Kinda hooked on that know after the camera crapped out on me 😦
On the plus side, went to Staples and got a 4 gig card on sale (only $13).. yipppieeeeeee for me, now I can take about 5k pics.. LOL yes 5k way to many..

Now the next is not survival related but relaxation and skills that will increase my dexterity and Eye Hand Coordination, along with some fine detail work that will come in handy in the next 2 yrs or so.

I STARTED CARVING AGAIN.. Ya for me.. and about time.
Right now I am carving a Celtic Knot on Basswood. Simple and easy yet elegant and peaceful!
· Need to get some more Carbon Copy Paper, I need this as my drawing and artwork leave much to be desired, LOL.. a lot to be desired is an understatement really!

What did you do for Prepping this week or month so far?
